چکیده
In hyperalkaline () fluids that have participated in low-temperature (<150) serpentinization reactions, the dominant form of C is often methane (), but origin this uncertain. To assess serpentinite aquifers within Samail Ophiolite, Oman, we determined fluid chemical compositions, analyzed taxonomic profiles fluid-hosted microbial communities, and measured isotopic compositions hydrocarbon gases. We found 16S rRNA gene sequences affiliated with methanogens were widespread aquifer. clumped isotopologue (D ) relative abundances less than equilibrium, consistent substantial production. Furthermore, observed an inverse relationship between dissolved inorganic concentrations across bearing microbiological evidence methanogenic activity, suggesting apparent isotope effect methanogenesis modulated by availability. An additional source evidenced presence -bearing inclusions Ophiolite our measurement high values ethane propane, which are similar to those reported studies -rich rocks from oceanic lithosphere. addition, aerobic methanotrophs and, lower abundance, anaerobic methanotrophs, indicating consumption ophiolite may further enrich 13C. conclude produced under varying degrees limitation mixes abiotic released inclusions. This study lends insight into functioning ecosystems supported water/rock reactions.

Geological and Geochemical Controls on Subsurface Microbial Life in the Samail Ophiolite, Oman
Microbial abundance and diversity in deep subsurface environments is dependent upon the availability of energy and carbon. However, supplies of oxidants and reductants capable of sustaining life within mafic and ultramafic continental aquifers undergoing low-temperature water-rock reaction are relatively unknown. We conducted an extensive analysis of the geochemistry and microbial communities r...
متن کاملCoexisting serpentine and quartz from carbonate-bearing serpentinized peridotite in the Samail Ophiolite, Oman
Tectonically exposed mantle peridotite in the Oman Ophiolite is variably serpentinized and carbonated. Networks of young carbonate veins are prevalent in highly serpentinized peridotite, particularly near low-temperature alkaline springs emanating from the peridotite. An unusual feature in some samples is the coexistence of serpentine and quartz, which is not commonly observed in serpentinites....
متن کاملFossils of hydrothermal vent worms from cretaceous sulfide ores of the samail ophiolite, oman.
Fossil worm tubes of Cretaceous age preserved in the Bayda massive sulfide deposit of the Samail ophiolite, Oman, are apparently the first documented examples of fossils embedded in massive sulfide deposits from the geologic record. The geologic setting of the Bayda deposit and the distinctive mineralogic and textural features of the fossiliferous samples suggest that the Bayda sulfide deposit ...
